list of commonly wrested Scriptures
Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless. And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen. - 2Peter 3:14-18
In the above passage it is said by Peter that unprincipled men will wrest the Scriptures unto their own destruction. Although this warning is to be taken in a general sense, per the context above and of 2Peter 3 in general we see that Peter specifically has in mind passages pertaining to eschatology, the purpose and duration of the present Church era, and our hope in the imminent coming of the Lord. This is no small matter.
This section will serve as a collection and explanation of Bible verses which are commonly wrested either in opposition to Dispensational Premillennialism, or as supposedly in favor of Covenant Amillennialism. This section will expand over time, and I hope to eventually have every passage covered pertaining to the issue. For now, here are the passages I've personally answered on a fairly regular basis and immediately come to mind when I've started preparing this section:
Daniel 7:27 "His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom"
Matthew 12:28 "The kingdom of God has come upon you"
Luke 11:20 "The kingdom of God has come upon you"
Luke 17:20 "The kingdom does not come with observation... the kingdom of God is within you"
John 5:25 "An hour is coming and now is...those who hear shall live"
John 5:28 "All who are in the tombs... shall come forth"
John 17:15 "I do not ask You to take them out of the world"
John 18:36 "My kingdom is not of this world"
Romans 14:17 "For the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but... joy in the Holy Spirit"
Colossians 1:13 "Transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son"
If you have a particular passage you would like to see added to this list and explained, please contact the webmaster via the Feedback button to the left of your screen. Be sure to include the Scripture citation and a brief description of the abuse of the passage you would like to see answered.
Thank you, and God bless you as you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.
